Planning and Construction of Data Centers
In terms of the planning, design, construction, operations and maintenance, and evaluation of Internet data centers, Baidu has been involved in drafting a series of industry standards, including the Telecommunication Internet Data Center Technology Specification (YD/T 2542-2013), the Internet Data Center Classful Technology Specification (YD/T 2441-2013), the Technology Specification and Evaluation Methods for Occupancy of Resources Energy Efficiency and Emission of IDCC (YD/T 2441-2013), and the Energy Efficiency's Evaluation Methods of IDC (YD/T 2543-2013).
The vigorous development of cloud computing and big data has led to the booming construction demand for data construction. To build modern data centers in the fastest and simplest way, Baidu put forward the innovative concept of prefabricated modular construction and participated in the formulation of Technical Specifications on Prefabricated Module in Data Center (YD/T 3291-2017). In addition, Baidu also participated in the drafting of the Technical Requirements of All-in-one Micro Modular Data Center (YD/T 3290-2017), aiming to meet modern enterprises’ requirements for cloud computing, virtualization, and high density and improve the operational efficiency of data centers. These two industry standards were awarded the Third Prize of the Science and Technology Award by China Communications Standards Association (CCSA) in 2018.
Technology Research and Development of Data Centers
With the continuously growing number of Internet users, the heat dissipating capacity of data centers has also been expanding. The rack cooling method based on the heat pipe backplate can handle the heat dissipation issue of high-density racks. In this respect, Baidu participated in the preparation of the White Paper on Cooling System Technology based on the Heat Pipe Backplate. To remedy the weakness of traditional backup power systems, Baidu shared the Practices of Distributed Lithium-ion Battery Systems in Data Centers with the industry. Baidu gives priority to optimizing the power density, backup time, and system monitoring of lithium-ion batteries to respond to different scenarios, which is more flexible and convenient for operations and maintenance.
Meanwhile, the development of big data technology calls for demanding requirements for cold storage. Therefore, Baidu participated in the drafting of the ODCC standard of Scorpio Cold Storage Project 2.0 (ODCC-08-2016) to regulate the main components and interfaces of Scorpio rack servers, push forward the development of the rack server industry and improve the sustainability of the IT industry, by drawing lessons from the research and scaled practices of cold storage technology based on rack server, proceeding from the domestic environment of data center and characteristics of business demands and combining existing experiences in tests, deployment, and operations and maintenance.
Driven by cloud computing technology, more emphasis has been placed on innovating economical and efficient service node solutions, among which the rack server has been proved to be instrumental to energy conservation and pollution reduction, efficiency improvement of operating and maintenance, and operation cost reduction. Baidu participated in the establishment of five industry standards related to rack server, including the Technical Requirements for Rack Server (YD/T 3292-2017), the Technical Specification of Power Supply Subsystem for Rack Server (YD/T 3293-2017), the Technical Specification of Management Subsystem for Rack server (YD/T 3294-2017), the Technical Specification of Server Subsystem for Rack Server (YD/T 3295-2017), the Technical Requirements of Rack Subsystem for Rack Server (YD/T 3398-2018).
